I can´t scan some movies

Hi.
First of all, congratulations for the Firefly. It´s a fantastic tool.

I installed Firefly (svn 1659) in a Windows XP machine and it works great with music. But I have some issues with movies.

I have three kinds of movies:

1- a m4v file with 480×272 resolution from downloaded from Apple.com
(apple-iphone-welcome_480x272.m4v)

2- a m4v file with HD resolution of a movie trailer from Apple.com (iron man.m4v)

3- a m4v file with standard definition (640×480) made with Handbrake. (Vertigo.m4v)

The number 1 movie work very well. The second show only the first frame in a wireless network, but play with dropframes in the same computer that have the Firefly server.

But the third I can´t make the Firefly scan that movie. I changed the extension to mov (Vertigo.mov) and the Firefly read the movie, but iTunes only play the sound, not the images.

Is there a problem with the file made in Handbrake?

You are running into two different issues, both related to the re-write of the file and socket handling since 1589.

One is an issue with slow networking on windows, that’s making the frames drop. The other is an issue with metadata scanning, which was a bug in the metadata scanner.

The first issue I am actually working on right now. The second issue is fixed in version control, and will be in the next nightlies.

Hopefully by tomorrow I’ll have both issues fixed.

You have two options, then:

1. Wait for next nightlies (likely tomorrow)
2. Drop back to svn-1589, which shouldn’t have the problems.

I think I will wait for the next revision.
I´m too trying to make a Ubuntu Server with Firefly, so when it is ready, I will test the next versions in that system.

In both, Firefly still don’t scan some m4v or mov files.

There’s only one video (IronMan trailer from the Quicktime site) that was scanned.

I think that Firefly only scan movie files wich the tag “Kind” in iTunes is “Quicktime Movie File”.

If I take a movie with the kind tag labeled “MPEG-4 Movie File” and export trought the Quicktime Pro, the movie will change to “Quicktime Movie File” and it’ll work with Firefly.

Yes, all this movies played well in iTunes before the conversion.

There are some from a Apple´s podcast:

This podcasts are MPEG-4 Video File and work perfectly with iTunes, but they are scanned by Firefly. After I convert them to Quicktime Video File with quicktime (export as mpeg-4, video setting: Pass Throught, audio setting: Pass Throught) they were scanned by Firefly (both in Windows and Debian systems)

There´s some others videos that I made with HandBrake, but they are too huge to post a link to them.

Finaly, I have to say that Firefly is working perfectly in Debian throught a wireless network. As a sugestion, I think that could be good to limit in the Web GUI the number of users that could access the Firefly playlists or play the musics and videos.

I have some thoughts on that, with regard to classes of users and casting logins to particular classes based on source ip, or password, or client user-agent, or what have you.

Haven’t really gotten to implement much based on that, as I think that it probably means *another* config file format change, but I have some thoughts already in that direction.
