Please help: Unable to open database. Config file posted.

For 9 months or so I’d been running Firefly on my Windows Media Center PC to serve songs to my Roku Soundbridge. A few weeks ago I started finding Firefly stopped all the time. I could restart it but it would very soon stop again. I removed and reinstalled both Bonjour and Firefly and now I can’t even get Firefly to start! Here’s the log:

Some changes to files and programs in the last few weeks: I installed Orb (Orb 2.0); I installed Mozy; I moved my iTunes music folder from one drive to another (and updated the location in both iTunes, which is working, and Firefly); there was, I think, a McAfee update (but McAfee firewall still shows Firefly as having full access); there was a Firefox update after which I got a pop up saying that Firefox was disabling some incompatible Java plug-in. When I just removed and re-installed Bonjour (Bonjour for Windows 1.04) and Firefly (1.0 svn-1586), both installations were I think newer versions than the ones I previously had. Please help if you can.

Well, it seems that your database directoyr is no longer accesible to firefly.
Could be its McAffee thats blocking access at that time, or that the path is generally locked….

Check out the firefly config file (called mt-daapd.conf for legacy reasons ;)) and especially the line that contains “db_param”. Thats the culprit path.

I don’t know how to open mt-dpaad.conf, and I’m not sure what I should be looking for or how to fix it if I were to open it. Can I email the conf file to you or send you a remote desktop invitation? I did just Google for some freeware to open a conf file and downloaded “libconfig-1..1.3.tar.gz” but it seams I need a program I don’t have to open that! If you want to email your email address to me I’m [email protected].

You can edit the conf file with notepad or wordpad.

Thanks. After reading the recommendation of 1489 posted on the rokulabs forum, I removed 1586 and installed 1489. 1489 might have been the version that had stopped working after many months of joy and started my flailing around to find the problem (which led to my removing whatever version had stopped and installing 1586), but in any event removing 1586 and installing or re-installing 1489 temporarily restored my service. After starting (a big improvement over 1586!) and scanning my library, 1489 ran for 10 minutes or so but then stopped. I’ll post the error report and log in the next message.

Would you recommend I change the rescan interval and/or the scan always settings to 0? Also, you may see above in my log that there are some weird entries mixed in with my playlists (entries that firefly fails to scan but then lists among playlists even though these entries contain no items). Would changing m3u setting to 0 fix that, or if not would you suggest a fix?

This is a program that’s locked the database file when the server tries to open it.

It used to be anti-virus software that would do that, but (assuming you are using sqlite3 as a db backend rather than sqlite2), it should be worked around with the current version.

I’d guess it’s one of the two pieces of software you mentioned.

Do you have an option to not back up files by extension? Like, can you configure it not to back up the database or scan files with an extension of .db?

I think that would probably fix it.

If the problem is Mozy, an offsite backup program, then I should be able to stop it from scanning and backing up the db file. I don’t think Mozy lets you ignore files by extension, but it has a directory check box system for selecting and deselecting which files are in the backup group. I definitely want Mozy to back up my music files, but I guess I don’t need it to back up the firefly db. Is the file I may need to prevent from being backed up the “songs3” database file in the Firefly folder? If the problem is Orb, a media server, then I think I can likewise tell it to look in certain directories and not others. Thanks again for your help. BTW, if you get a chance I’d be grateful for your advice on the config file settings questions I posed in my immediately previous post in this string: I.e., would you recommend setting rescan and always scan to 0 (and just manually telling Firefly to scan when I add new items to my library), and — more importantly — do you think setting m3u to 0 will eliminate those phantom playlists (or is there another fix for that)?
