I’m stuck. I tried starting all over, following the instructions, eliminating a few spaces where I was not sure if they were meant to be there or not. I feel like I’m close to making something happen, because it looks like things are downloading in the background, but the results are not as expected, and I keep getting the “invalid magic” message.
Am I doing any harm by trying the same thing over and over again? (btw, I think that is someone’s definition of insanity.)
Here is the latest output from putty:

#Not sure what’s up with that. Your ftp is clearly broken, though. Like it’s picking up another ftp besides the one in /bin, or your LD_LIBRARY path is on /opt.
You can try this:
export PATH=/bin:/sbin
unexport LD_LIBRARY_PATHipkg install ncurses nano
Might be environment changes from the twonky install?

28/09/2007 at 8:59 PM #11274squashuaxParticipantI tried your suggestion, as follows:
BusyBox v1.00-pre2 (2006.02.01-23:21+0000) Built-in shell (msh)
Enter ‘help’ for a list of built-in commands.# export PATH=/bin:/sbin

#I’m still having the same problem. I also tried following the directions in the links provided, but the directions seem geared toward a person much more familiar with Linux then I am. I’m looking for very specific instructions – I’ll type whatever you suggest into Putty, exactly as described, but any instructions that suggest changing a directory or downloading a file and installing from another location, without explicit instructions, I can’t handle. I’m learning, but I need someone to “dumb this down” for me.
Is there any way to just start all over?
Thanks in advance for your help and patience. This is probably as frustrating for you as it is for me (and my family!)
28/09/2007 at 9:17 PM #11275squashuaxParticipantNow I’m really toast… I thought maybe I could just go back to the MSS Jukebox media server, and live without playlists, but no.
So now I am determined to make Firefly work. I need something like Firefly for dummies. My system is really simple: Just a Compaq with Window XP, and Maxtor MSS+ plugged into Linksys WRT54GS. Everything is right out of the box – the only “hacking” or changes I’ve tried have been based on instructions from the Firefly site. I need help to make this work!
28/09/2007 at 10:14 PM #11276IrisParticipantI can understand your frustration. As you’ll see by my signature I’m running a similar set-up and the instructions at the wiki did work – at one time. But I now find any attempt to download from http://ipkg.nslu2…. generates the “invalid magic” error. Originally, the link was http://ipkg-us-dyoung.nslu2… but that’s changed since I installed. So now, any of the files I attempt to download using ipkg install or manually generates the error.
I don’t think it’s really related to firefly. I don’t know if the solution is for Ron to host some of these packages as they are required for ff but until something changes a lot of users are going to run into this – just read the number of posts of members running into this.

Try using
http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/nslu2/feeds/optware/mss/cross/unstable
# echo "src nslu2 http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/nslu2/feeds/optware/mss/cross/unstable" > /opt/etc/ipkg.conf
# echo "src firefly http://ipkg.fireflymediaserver.org/mipsel" >> /opt/etc/ipkg.conf
# ipkg update

29/09/2007 at 1:46 PM #11278squashuaxParticipantWill do.
Is it possible or necessary to wipe anything off of the MSS first? I’ve been trying so many things I worry that I may have created paths pr installed files that will interfere with the installation once I finally get pointed to the right download site.
Also, since it is obviously downloading some files, is it safe to assume that the firewall and port settings on the Linksys WRT54GS are set correctly?
I am very much looking forward to getting this working!
Thanks.

Everything seems to be downloading without error. See below. Based on the new installation, what are the final steps necessary to enable the server, and point it to my itunes folder on the MSS at Compaq_Owner on ‘MAXTOR_JSK (Maxtor_jsk)’ (Y:) or y:My MusiciTunes?
The directions on the wiki were based on the files at the other ftp site. Are there different instructions based on the new download?

At this point, mt-daapd is installed and ready to go.
The easiest way is to use the web based configuration. Just type “http://:3689” in your browser. You may be prompted for a username (admin) and password (mt-daapd).
You should get something that looks like this:
Click on “configuration” on the left pane. You should see something like this:
Under “Music Files” , change the folder to where your music files are stored on your MSS. You can also change the server name if you wish (this will be the name that shows up under the Shared section in iTunes).
Go back to the server status page, click on Start Server by the Firefly Media Server text, then you’ll probably want to do a full scan. After the scan is done, your Firefly server should be good to go.
