When serving flac files to a soundbridge, does the hardware play the files nativley lossless or are they compressed to mp3 before transmitting across the network?

Neither. Firefly “transcodes” or “decodes” flac (whichever way you want to semantically look at it) to wav before sending the stream to the soundbridge.
Therefore, your network connection btwn soundbridge and firefly needs to be pretty reliable to do flac.
