In retrospect a post on the various zero config servers and which configure switches to use would have made things simpler.
(but then I’m about as noobie as it gets with linux)
I needed to:
1) type in ‘ps aux’
2) look for the following processes
avahi-daemon
mDNSResponder
…..
3) If there isn’t a service running … install a service ..etc. etc.
4) If there is a service use the appropriate -enable parameter in ./configure
5) Don’t worry if Bonjour says that it’s stopped on the web admin screen..
…just worry if you are seeing things on iTunes
(I guess that the web admin app doesn’t check all the zero config services)
