1696 suddenly erroring like crazy

On my Windows XP machine, all of a sudden I’m either having trouble connecting to Firefly from my Soundbridge (I get either ‘failed to connect’ or ‘cannot load songs,’ or sometimes the Roku plays tracks but no sound comes out.
