Hello. I am a longtime Soundbridge user and have been using Firefly to serve up my music for several months. I also use the server to access music via my laptop when using RAS for work.
For the most part I think Firefly is a great solution. It isn’t a resource hog and does what I want it to do. My only problem is that for the life of me I can’t seem to keep the server running. There doesn’t seem to be any event that triggers the server to stop working. And when I look at the log (I might not be doing this right) usually its after I start it again and it just shows the server starting. It doesn’t happen enough to be able to discern any pattern out of it so I am sort of clueless as to where to begin. But almost every time I am in my bedroom or living room on one of the soundbridges or on my latpop I have to go over to my computer hosting the server and manually start it. I know this isn’t a lot to go on but any suggestions will be greately appreciated. I am running this on an XP SP2 machine with plenty of processing power and memory. Other apps are stable. Thanks in advance.
I should note that the hardware (the PC running the application) is not stopping but it is the Firefly Server that stops working). Thanks.

I removed it from there and put it on to a Windows Home Server machine and it was running fine for about three weeks and then all of a sudden the server won’t stay on. It’ll run for a couple of hours and then shut itself off. The server stays on and isn’t going into any power saving modes or anything like that. I managed to be listening to something on my laptop and right in the middle of a song the Firefly server just shut down. I have sinced removed it from the WHS machine (its just the eval version of WHS) and have tried to reinstall in on the XP SP2 machine and now I keep getting an error that says “Failed to start Firefly Media Server”. Any ideas as to what may be the problem, other than Windows?

2008-02-19 13:17:18 (023ce670): Error: unable to open database file
2008-02-19 13:17:18: AbortingSo this is a complete guess but it appears to be related around unable to open the database file that stores the scanned info. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks again.

That usually means that the db file is locked by another program. might be a virus scanner. might be a realtime backup program… you can try a newer nightly (http://nightlies.fireflymediaserver.org) if you aren’t alrady — there are some fixes there for locks by av programs.
If you are on a newish nightly, and are still having the problem, see if you can figure out what 3rd party program is grabbing the database, and see if you can exclude it from whatever the application is doing.
